It was almost 2 AM.
I should have been asleep. Instead I was hunched over my laptop, three tabs deep into the official POCO launch page, refreshing high res render after high res render of the F9 Ultra like some kind of obsessed art collector staring at a painting he can't afford yet.

My goodness.
I wasn't even planning to write about this phone tonight. I was just going to "take a quick look." That quick look turned into four hours. FOUR HOURS, folks. That's what this machine does to you. It doesn't just show up... it ambushes you.
By the time the sun started creeping up, I had a Dark Cherry red render saved as my wallpaper and a document open titled "why this phone matters." You're reading what came out of that document.
This Is Not Just Another Mid Ranger
Let's get one thing straight right away.
POCO has spent years being the scrappy underdog. The brand that gave you flagship guts at a price that didn't make your wallet cry. And for a long time that was the whole pitch. Good enough, cheap enough, done.
The F9 Ultra throws that script out the window.
This is Poco walking into the ring against Samsung and OnePlus and saying I belong here now. And after staring at these specs for half the night... I think they might be right.
The Deep Dive... Anatomy of a Beast
Alright, let's pop the hood. This is where I get to nerd out, and trust me, there's a LOT to nerd out about.
Start with the screen, because it's the first thing that grabs you by the collar. A massive 6.9 inch AMOLED panel, built with TCL CSOT, running at a genuinely absurd 185Hz refresh rate. That's the kind of number you usually see bolted onto a dedicated gaming phone with a built in fan and RGB lighting, not a phone that also wants to be your everyday driver. Peak brightness climbs as high as 4,500 nits in standard use and reportedly punches up to 10,000 nits during HDR playback. I'm telling you folks... that's not a display, that's a small sun strapped to the front of your hand.
Under the hood sits the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, paired with up to 16GB of RAM and storage options stretching to 512GB. Leaked Geekbench numbers show this thing scoring around 2,980 single core and over 10,000 multi core. Translation for the non nerds in the room... this thing does not stutter. It does not flinch. It chews through whatever you throw at it and asks for seconds.
Then there's the camera system, and this is where the Ultra badge really earns its stripes. A 200 megapixel main sensor with OIS anchors the setup, backed by a 50 megapixel periscope telephoto lens capable of 5x optical zoom, 10x lossless zoom, and up to 20x AI assisted digital zoom. Add a 50 megapixel ultrawide into the mix and you've got a camera trio that reads more like a compact mirrorless setup than a phone module. There's a 32 megapixel selfie shooter up front too, because apparently even the front camera didn't want to be left out of the party.
And the battery. Oh, the battery.
An 8,050mAh silicon carbon cell. Let that number sit for a second. That's the kind of capacity that used to require a case the size of a brick just a few years ago. It supports 100W wired HyperCharge, 50W wireless charging, and even reverse charging both wired and wireless. You could top up your earbuds off this thing while it's still got half a tank left. Absolute madness.
Audio deserves its own paragraph because Poco clearly didn't treat sound as an afterthought this time. A 2.1 channel setup co-developed with Bose, complete with dual symmetrical stereo speakers and a dedicated subwoofer, is tucked into this chassis. A phone with a subwoofer. Let that sink in.

Build quality gets serious attention too. Gorilla Glass 7i up front, a metal frame, and IP69 certification, meaning this thing shrugs off dust, splashes, and even high pressure water jets. There's even a programmable LED notification ring on the back, a little touch of personality on a phone that clearly wanted to stand out in every possible way.
The Honest Truth... Pros and Cons From a Guy Who's Obsessed
Now here comes the part where I stop gushing for a minute and put my honest hat on. Because passion without honesty is just marketing, and I refuse to do that to you.
What's absolutely glorious here is the value equation. Poco has essentially taken a rebranded Redmi K100 Pro Max, Xiaomi's genuine flagship, and repackaged it under the Poco name with pricing expected to land around $1,150 for the top configuration in global markets. For a display this fast, a chipset this strong, a camera system this ambitious, and a battery this massive, that's a gut punch to every "flagship" charging you two grand for less.
The screen alone will leave your jaw on the floor. The battery life should comfortably stretch across two full days of real use. And the camera versatility, especially that periscope zoom, opens up creative possibilities that most phones in this price range simply don't offer.
Now for the heartbreak part.
This phone is not launching in the US. I said it and my chest actually hurt typing it. American buyers are going to be stuck watching from the sidelines, maybe forced into grey market imports or waiting on a variant that may never come. That stings.
There's also the elephant in the room that a few outlets have already pointed out. This is, structurally, a rebadged Redmi K100 Pro Max with a smaller battery than its Chinese sibling. Poco fans who remember the brand's underdog "flagship killer" roots might feel a small pang watching the pricing creep closer to premium territory. The days of Poco being the wild value disruptor might be quietly fading, and that's a bittersweet thing to witness as someone who's followed this brand since the beginning.
And the chipset, while excellent, is the same Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 used in last year's flagship wave. It's a beast, don't get me wrong, but it's not the newest silicon Qualcomm has cooking.
The Final Shout
So here I am, sun coming up outside my window, eyes burning from staring at spec sheets and render galleries for way too long, and I keep coming back to the same feeling.
This phone is pure heaven wrapped in aluminum and Gorilla Glass.
It's loud where it needs to be loud. The screen. The speakers. The battery. And it's quiet where it counts too, because underneath all that spectacle is a genuinely thoughtful piece of engineering.
Is it perfect? No. Nothing ever is. The US snub hurts. The rebadge conversation is a fair one to have.
But my goodness, when a phone can make a grown tech writer lose an entire night of sleep just from PHOTOS on a website... you know something special is happening here.
Poco didn't just build another phone with the F9 Ultra.
They built a statement.
And I, for one, cannot wait to hold this beast in my actual hands.
Wow, This one's going to be talked about for a while.
